Welcome to the wild world of catskiing in North Macedonia, where the stoke is high and the powder is deep. Last season, I found myself in the Balkans with a motley crew of 11 skiers and one wandering snowboarder from across the globe. We hailed from the US, Canada, and various corners of Europe, but despite our cultural quirks and accents, we clicked instantly like long-lost shred buddies.
This place? A freeskier’s playground with epic lines, untracked pow, and a vibe that’ll have you grinning like a kid with a new set of twin tips. Join me as I spill the beans on how to dive into this Balkan beauty, complete with a few laugh-out-loud moments and the kind of insider tips you wish you’d had yesterday.

Getting There
Flights
You need to fly to Skopje Alexander the Great Airport (SKP). There are often great deals, especially if you book in advance.
Find the best flight deals / cheap flights to Skopje here.
Touching down at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport (SKP) is like arriving at the starting line of an epic adventure. As our crew gathered at the airport, we were a buzzing mix of excitement and jet lag, exchanging high-fives and stoked to finally hit the slopes. But of course, the universe had a little surprise in store.
My buddy, the sole snowboarder in our crew, has a knack for vanishing just when you need him. True to form, as we were counting heads before departure, he was nowhere to be seen. My mind raced with visions of him on a random bus to nowhere. After a frantic search through the airport halls, I found him, calm as can be, lining up for a SIM card. Rookie move!
Communication: Stay Connected
Here’s a pro tip: save yourself the panic attack and snag an eSIM before you leave home. We recommend Yesim’s North Macedonia eSIM package, which lets you stay connected the minute you land. It’s way easier, and you can keep your squad’s group chat alive without the stress of wandering buddies. Plus, having a local connection helps when navigating Skopje’s bustling streets or sharing those epic powder pics on the fly.
Languages Spoken
In North Macedonia, the official language is Macedonian, which uses the Cyrillic alphabet. You’ll also hear Albanian, especially in certain regions. Our experience confirmed that in Skopje, English is spoken quite well, making it easy to get around and communicate. In Popova Shapka, though, it’s a different story. The hotel staff often didn’t speak much English, and we had to rely on our trusty guides to help with translations. This adds a fun layer of adventure, but it’s something to be prepared for.
Ground Transportation to Popova Shapka
Once reunited, we were whisked away in style—a plush bus waiting to transport us from the hustle of the airport to the serene slopes of Popova Shapka. The ride was a mix of catching up, sharing travel tales, and a little snoozing (thanks to the early flights). Our destination: Hotel Scardus 4*, where we’d be crashing for the week in a cozy all-inclusive setup that promised camaraderie and culinary delights.
Whether you’re coming from across the pond or just a hop over the Adriatic, getting to North Macedonia is a breeze if you plan it right.
Most tour operators provide hassle-free pick-up services, ensuring a smooth ride straight from the airport to Popova Shapka.
If you’re planning your own adventure, the easiest option is to have your hotel arrange a transfer for you. While public transportation in the area isn’t highly developed, a pre-arranged transfer guarantees you’ll travel in comfort and avoid any logistical headaches. Plus, prices for these services are quite reasonable, so they won’t break the bank, making it an affordable and stress-free option.
Ground Transportation Options
- Taxi Services: The cost for a taxi ride from Skopje Airport to Popova Shapka typically ranges between €50 and €65. This price covers a private transfer, usually accommodating up to four passengers, with the option to choose a larger vehicle for groups or if you have ski equipment. Many taxi services offer fixed prices with no hidden fees, which include fuel, tolls, and a dedicated driver.
- Hotel Arranged Transfers: If you prefer a more seamless experience, hotels can arrange transfers for you. Prices for these services are competitive, and you can often book them directly through the hotel when you make your reservation. This option ensures you have transportation waiting for you upon arrival and offers a comfortable, stress-free journey to Popova Shapka.
- Public Transportation: While public transportation isn’t highly developed for direct routes to Popova Shapka, there are buses from Skopje to Tetovo which is nearby Popova Shapka. From there you can take a taxi for the final stretch. However, this can be less convenient than a direct transfer, especially if you’re traveling with ski equipment.
Getting there is half the fun, so buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life.
A Quick Note on the Name: Why “North” Macedonia?
You might wonder why it’s called North Macedonia. Until recently, it was known as the Republic of Macedonia. The name change to North Macedonia happened in 2019, following a long-standing dispute with Greece, which has its own region called Macedonia. The new name resolved this international issue and opened the door for North Macedonia to join organizations like NATO.
Catskiing in North Macedonia: Freeriders’ Heaven
Once you set foot in the Shar Mountains, you’ll know you’ve hit the jackpot for freeriding. This place is the real deal, offering varied terrain that would make any powder lover salivate. With a mix of wide-open slopes, tight tree runs, and perfectly carved couloirs, it’s no wonder one part of these mountains is fondly known as “Little Verbier.”
Last season, we hit the jackpot with Mother Nature as it started dumping heavily the moment we arrived, blessing us with fresh pow that lasted for days. There’s nothing like that first morning, gearing up and knowing you’re about to dive into some killer tree runs and couloirs. Every line was a new adventure, and with each run, we were like kids in a candy store, each of us finding our little slice of powder paradise.
Epic Snow Conditions for Catskiing in North Macedonia
The Shar Mountains are strategically blessed by the snow gods, benefiting from frequent storms rolling in from the Adriatic and Aegean seas. This geographical magic ensures consistent, deep powder throughout the season. You can expect a mix of snow types, from light and fluffy to perfectly packed, ideal for those sweet, arcing turns.
Every day, we averaged about 4,000 vertical meters thanks to our mighty snowcats, which ferried us to the top and picked us up again at the bottom. The cats handled the climbing, allowing us to focus on what we love – shredding the gnar.
However, in true mountain fashion, the snow gods decided to spice things up later in our adventure. Without any further snowfall after that first dump, the pristine powder transformed into a bit of a mixed bag, with gnarly windblown patches and icy sections that demanded every ounce of technical skill we could muster.
Thankfully, we had an exceptionally strong crew of riders who embraced the challenge. It became less about the perfect line and more about the adventure of tackling whatever Mother Nature threw at us.
Assessing Your Riding Skills for Catskiing in North Macedonia
Before you embark on this epic journey, it’s important to be honest about your riding level. The Shar Mountains offer a variety of challenging terrains that require confidence and skill. If you find yourself in a group of strong riders and can’t keep up, you might end up having to stay in the cat while the others are out there having fun.
Make sure you’re comfortable with steep descents and variable snow conditions. If you have any doubts, consider brushing up on your skills before joining the adventure. This will ensure you make the most of your experience and avoid any disappointment.
Local Legends: Catskiing Guides in North Macedonia
Each group is paired with two seasoned guides who know the Shar Mountains like the back of their hand. These guys are not just there for safety—they make sure you find the best lines and even sprinkle in some local history and culture. It’s like having a personal sherpa and storyteller wrapped into one. Our guides were legends, ensuring we hit the best snow while keeping us safe and sound.
When Is the Best Time to Ski in North Macedonia?
Peak skiing times in North Macedonia generally occur during the holiday season, from late December through February. This period coincides with the best snow conditions and increased visitor numbers, particularly around Christmas, New Year’s, and February holidays. Resorts like Popova Shapka and Mavrovo are popular destinations during these months, with more visitors flocking in for weekend skiing, especially due to the resorts’ proximity to major cities like Skopje. February, in particular, sees many events like the Sar Cup, which further draws in crowds.
Below historical average snowfall chart gives a week-by-week overview.
Gear Essentials for Catskiing in North Macedonia
Before heading into the Shar Mountains, it’s crucial to ensure you’re geared up like a true pow maverick. We learned early on that while Popova Shapka offers incredible terrain, having the right gear can make all the difference when you’re dropping into those steep couloirs or navigating through the trees.
State-of-the-Art Rentals
While we always recommend bringing your own gear, especially your boots for the best fit and performance, the local catski operators run a top-notch rental shop. They’ve got state-of-the-art gear that’s ready to rip, making it a solid option if you’re traveling light or want to try something new.
Try Before You Buy
One of the highlights was getting our hands on some brand-new Elan test skis, which we were able to demo for a couple of days. It was a blast trying out the latest models and seeing how they handled the varied terrain. If you’re curious about testing new equipment, this is a great opportunity to do so.
Safety First
The tour operators also provide all the necessary avalanche safety gear, including airbag backpacks, shovels, probes, and transceivers. All the equipment is very well maintained, giving us peace of mind as we tackled the backcountry. This means you can focus on the thrill of the ride, knowing you’re prepared for any conditions.
Staying Hydrated and Comfortable
There are plenty of drinks available in the cat, ensuring everyone stays hydrated throughout the day. However, keep in mind that these bottles are shared among several people. If you’re sensitive about germs or prefer having your own supply, consider bringing a personal hydration system. This way, you can enjoy those long descents without worrying about sharing bottles.
Packing plenty of layers is essential as the weather can swing from sunny to snowy in a heartbeat. Being prepared for sudden temperature changes will keep you comfortable throughout your adventure.
Despite the challenges, our strong group of riders tackled the terrain with enthusiasm, proving that with the right gear and mindset, anything is possible in the Shar Mountains.
